Steps to miles
Here is how far your steps took you, worked out from your height or, better, your own step length.
Your details
10,000 steps is about
4.38
miles (7.05 km)
- Step length used27.7 in (from your height)
- Steps in a mile2,284
- Steps in a kilometre1,419
- Over a week at this rate30.6 miles, about 1,598 a year
- At 100 steps a minute (moderate starts here)1 hr 40 min of walking, about 2.6 mph
- Energy for those stepsadd your weight to see it
- The evidence (add your age)benefits level off at about 8,000 to 10,000 a day under 60, and 6,000 to 8,000 from 60
Height gives a fair guess, but stride varies a lot. For a better number, count your steps over a measured 100 metres and put that in.
The working
Steps times step length
A common rule of thumb puts step length at about 41% of height. At 5 ft 7 in (170.2 cm) that is 70.5 cm, or 27.7 inches. 10,000 × 70.5 cm = 7.05 km, or 4.38 miles. That makes about 2,284 steps a mile.
Measure yours
A better number in two minutes
- Find a measured 100 m, like a running track or a marked path
- Walk it at your normal pace, counting steps
- Divide 100 m by your count: 140 steps is 71 cm a step
- Put that in the step length box
Is it enough?
Time and the step evidence
At a brisk 100 steps a minute, the pace where walking turns moderate in the CADENCE-adults study, 10,000 steps is about 1 hour 40 minutes. Add your age and the result places your count against the Paluch 2022 analysis of 15 cohorts: benefits level off at about 8,000 to 10,000 steps a day under 60 and 6,000 to 8,000 from 60. Add a distance in miles and it gives the steps that walk takes you.
Pace and energy
How long the steps take and what they burn
Pick your walking pace in steps a minute. CADENCE-adults (Tudor-Locke 2019) found moderate effort starts at about 100 steps a minute and vigorous at about 130; a stroll is nearer 80. 10,000 steps at 5 ft 7 in take 1 hr 40 min at 100 a minute. Add your weight and we estimate the energy from the Compendium of Physical Activities walking values at that speed, with the part over resting shown separately: about 383 kcal, 277 of it extra, at 70 kg. Your step gets longer as you speed up, so treat the fast pace figures as rough.

| 6 ft 0 in | 29.8 in | about 2,120 |
Read with care
What this cannot tell you
- PaceFaster walking lengthens your step; strolling shortens it.
- RunningRunning steps are much longer; use a pace tool instead.
- Tracker accuracyWrist trackers can miss or add steps.
Questions
Common questions
How many steps are in a mile?
Usually 2,000 to 2,500, depending on your height and pace.
How many miles is 10,000 steps?
About 4 to 5 miles for most adults.
Is 10,000 steps a day necessary?
No. Benefits level off at about 8,000 to 10,000 for under 60s and 6,000 to 8,000 over 60.
