Children's Sleep Time

A child sleep figure on this page is a commonly discussed hours range for the age you type. Under 5 we show 10 to 13 hours, about 6 to 13 we show 9 to 11, and teens 8 to 10. Children vary. Naps, school and illness change the night. It is a reading aid, not a diagnosis and not a parenting score.

How it works

Common questions

What is the child sleep calculator?

A common sleep-hours range by age. It cannot see your child and cannot diagnose a sleep problem.

My child sleeps less and is fine.

Plenty of children sit outside a band and cope. Watch mood, learning and how they wake. A GP can put it in context.

Do naps count?

For younger children, total sleep in 24 hours is what many guides mean. This page only shows a hours band, not a nap timetable.

When should I worry?

Loud snoring, pauses in breathing, very restless nights, or a child who cannot stay awake in the day. That is a GP conversation.

Example scenarios

Ayesha, checking a 4-year-old

Age 4

A common range discussed is 10 to 13 hours, including any nap.

Noel, Year 4 school nights

Age 8

A common range discussed is 9 to 11 hours.

Soraya, GCSE-year evenings

Age 15

A common range discussed is 8 to 10 hours. Screens late will steal from that.

Understanding your results

Read the band, then look at the week you actually have. The adult sleep calculator is for you, not for them. If sleep looks painful or unsafe, talk to a GP rather than chasing a number.

About this result

Guidance only. Calculations run in your browser. Numbers are estimates, not a diagnosis.

How we calculate

Age bands often discussed for children and teens. Not an individual sleep study.

Limitations

  • Not a personalised timetable.
  • Not for infants under the age bands used here.

When to seek help
