A healthy weight for 5 ft 5 in

7 st 13 lb to 10 st 10 lb

BMI 18.5 to 24.9

  • Bottom of the range (BMI 18.5)7 st 13 lb
  • Top of the range (BMI 24.9)10 st 10 lb

Any weight in this range gives an adult BMI in the healthy band. It is a range, not a target, and where you sit in it is up to you.

The working

How the range is worked out

The NHS healthy BMI band runs from 18.5 to 24.9. Turn that round and you get a weight range for any height: multiply your height in metres by itself, then by 18.5 for the bottom and 24.9 for the top.

18.5 × m² to 24.9 × m²

At 5 ft 5 in (1.651 m), 1.651 × 1.651 = 2.726. So the range is 2.726 × 18.5 = 50.4 kg (7 st 13 lb) to 2.726 × 24.9 = 67.9 kg (10 st 10 lb).

Fair to everyone

Why some people get a lower top

NICE guideline NG246 says people with a South Asian, Chinese, other Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African or African-Caribbean family background tend to face a higher risk of type 2 diabetes and heart disease at a lower BMI. For them the healthy band stops at 22.9, so the top of the range comes down by about 5 kg for an average height.

Tick the box if that fits you. It is about health risk, not about how anybody looks.

Where you sit

If you add your weight

Put your weight in and we show your BMI and how far you are from either end of the range. If you are above it, there is no need to aim for the bottom: NICE notes that losing even 5% of your weight can improve blood pressure and blood sugar.

What this cannot tell you

  • MuscleHeavier, muscly builds can sit above the range while carrying little fat.
  • AgeOver 65, a weight towards the top of the range can be protective.
  • Growing bodiesChildren and teenagers need the NHS child BMI calculator.

Questions

Common questions

What is a healthy weight for 5 ft 5 in?

For most adults, about 7 st 13 lb to 10 st 10 lb (50.4 to 67.9 kg). On the NICE lower thresholds the top of the range is about 9 st 12 lb (62.4 kg).

Is the middle of the range the best place to be?

Not necessarily. Anywhere inside the range is a healthy BMI. Your build, your age and how active you are all matter, so pick a weight you can live with comfortably.

Why is the range so wide?

Because healthy bodies come in lots of shapes. A range of around 17 kg (about 2 st 10 lb) at an average height leaves room for different frames and muscle.
