  • Steps in a mile2,284
  • Steps in a kilometre1,419
  • As 5 km walks1.1 (a 5 km parkrun walk is 7,097 of your steps)
  • At 100 steps a minute (moderate starts here)1 hr 20 min of walking, about 2.6 mph

  • The evidence (add your age)benefits level off at about 8,000 to 10,000 a day under 60, and 6,000 to 8,000 from 60

Steps get shorter on hills, in crowds and when you stroll, so phone and watch distances drift. Measuring your own step over 100 metres is the best fix.

The working

8,000 steps at 5 ft 7 in

With a step of about 70.5 cm (41% of 170.2 cm), 8,000 steps × 0.705 m = 5.64 km. You take about 1,419 steps in each kilometre.

Why trackers disagree

Phones, watches and pedometers

A phone in a bag misses steps, and a wrist tracker can count arm movements as steps. Each uses its own step length guess, so distances drift by 10% or more. Picking one device and sticking with it matters more than perfect accuracy.

Planning in km

Steps for a distance

Put in a distance in kilometres and the result gives the steps and minutes it takes at your step length: at 70.5 cm, a 5 km parkrun walk is 7,092 steps, about 71 minutes at 100 steps a minute. With your age, the count is set against the Paluch 2022 levels where the benefit of more steps tails off.

Pace and energy

How long the steps take and what they burn

Pick your walking pace in steps a minute. CADENCE-adults (Tudor-Locke 2019) found moderate effort starts at about 100 steps a minute and vigorous at about 130; a stroll is nearer 80. 8,000 steps at 5 ft 7 in take 1 hr 20 min at 100 a minute. Add your weight and we estimate the energy from the Compendium of Physical Activities walking values at that speed, with the part over resting shown separately: about 306 kcal, 221 of it extra, at 70 kg. Your step gets longer as you speed up, so treat the fast pace figures as rough.
