The NHS suggests picking a regular time, such as the walk to work, to notice what is around you. In a 2023 Stanford study, 5 minutes a day of breathing or mindfulness for a month improved mood, so short and regular beats long and rare. The NHS also says mindfulness is not right for everyone; if it makes you feel worse, stop.

The working

10 minutes, 4 days a week, for 8 weeks

That is 40 minutes a week, about 5.7 minutes a day on average, and 5 h 20 min over 32 sessions in 8 weeks. It is a little more than a daily 5 minute practice, which adds up to 35 minutes a week.

What counts

From the NHS

Mindfulness means paying attention to the present moment: your thoughts, feelings, body and the world around you. The NHS suggests picking a regular time, such as the walk to work, and trying new things, like sitting somewhere different at lunch. Formal practice such as meditation, yoga or tai chi counts too.

Why 5 minutes a day is a handy yardstick

A 2023 study

In a month long Stanford study, people who did 5 minutes a day of breathing exercises or mindfulness meditation reported better mood, with slow breathing exercises doing slightly better than meditation. It is a small study, but it shows a little every day can be worth doing.

Questions

Common questions

How long should I practise mindfulness each day?

There is no official amount. A 2023 study used 5 minutes a day for a month and found mood improved, so starting small and regular makes sense.

Is it better to do 10 minutes daily or 30 minutes twice a week?

Regular practice is easier to turn into a habit, which is what tends to keep it going.

Does walking count as mindful time?

It can, if you are paying attention to what is around you: the NHS suggests the walk to work as a good time.

Can mindfulness make things worse?

For some people it can bring up difficult feelings. The NHS says it is not right for everyone, so stop if it does not help and talk to your GP.
