roughly when to think about a new pair
- Distance left150 miles
- Weeks left10
- With a second pair in rotationthis pair would last until Wed 10 March 2027
The 300 to 500 mile rule is a rough guide, not a test result. Look at the midsole: deep creases, a lean when they sit on a table, or new aches all suggest it is time. In a 2015 study, runners who rotated more than one pair had about 39% fewer running injuries.
The working
250 miles done, 15 a week
A 400 mile life leaves 150 miles: 10 weeks, so about the end of December from 21 October.
Signs they are done
Look and feel
- Deep creases in the midsole foam
- Shoes lean when you stand them on a table
- Worn through tread
- New aches after runs
Rotating pairs
Why two can beat one
In a 2015 study of 264 recreational runners (Malisoux and colleagues), those who used more than one pair in parallel had a 39% lower risk of a running injury. Sharing 15 miles a week between two pairs halves this pair's share to 7.5 miles, so its last 150 miles take 20 weeks instead of 10.
Make them last
Care
- Rotate two pairs
- Dry them away from radiators
- Wear them only for running
Your real pace of wear
Weeks worn and cost
Weekly plans and real weeks differ. Add how many weeks you have run in this pair and we use the distance on them to find your true average: 250 miles in 20 weeks is 12.5 a week, so the last 150 miles take 12 weeks and the date moves to mid January. Add the price and we show the cost per mile: a £120 pair is 48p a mile so far and 30p a mile over 400 miles.
