Kilometre split calculator
Even pacing usually gives the fastest time. Put in the distance and goal time and get the clock time to see at every kilometre or mile marker.

Write a few of these on your hand or set a lap alert. Hills move individual splits, so check the running total rather than every lap.
The working
Equal slices of your target
50 minutes over 10 km is 5:00 a kilometre, so the clock should read 5:00 at 1 km, 25:00 at 5 km and 50:00 at the finish. Marathons are shown every 5 km to keep the list short.
Using splits
On the day
- Check the running total, not each lap: one hilly kilometre is fine
- Lap alerts on a watch can drift from course markers; trust the markers
- If you are 20 seconds down at halfway, do not sprint it back
- Write three or four key splits on your hand

Steady start and clock times
Two options for race day
- First split slower by: many people start too fast in the crowd. Give the first split up to 30 seconds and the calculator spreads the time back over the rest, so your finish time does not change. For 10K in 50 minutes with a 20 second slower first kilometre, km 1 is 5:20 and the other nine are about 4:58.
- Race starts at: pick the start time to see the time of day at each split. Share it with supporters so they know when to be at the 5K mark.
- A halfway row is added in either case, because halfway is where most people check whether the plan is holding.
