The second run is where duathlons are decided. Starting the first run a little easier than feels right usually makes the whole race faster.

The working

A sprint duathlon

5 km at 5:30 is 27:30. 20 km at 30 km/h is 40:00. 2.5 km at 6:00 is 15:00. Three minutes of transitions makes 1:25:30.

The second run

Where it gets real

Legs feel heavy off the bike, so the second run is usually slower even though it is shorter. Leave the blank for run 2 and we add 5% to your first run pace.
