Cycling 3 days a week

2 hr 25 min

of cycling a week, at about 10 mph

  • Your bikecycling to or from work, 6.8 METs: vigorous, so each minute counts as two
  • Share of the 150 minute guideline193% (290 minutes)
  • Distance each week38.6 km (24.0 miles)
  • Energy each week1,147 kcal

A large UK Biobank study found people who cycled to work had a lower risk of heart disease and early death than those who drove or took the bus. Lights, a helmet if you like one, and a route away from the busiest roads help.

The working

4 miles each way, 3 days a week

24 miles a week at about 10 mph is 2 hr 25 min of cycling. At 6.8 METs that counts as vigorous: double the minutes, well over the guideline, and about 1,150 kcal a week.

On an e-bike with light assistance it is 6.0 METs, still vigorous; with high assistance 4.0 METs, so the same 2 hr 25 min counts as moderate, which is still nearly all of the 150. If your ride takes 30 minutes each way, put that in and we use your own time.

The evidence

UK Biobank

A 2017 BMJ study of over 260,000 UK commuters found people who cycled to work had a 41% lower risk of dying from any cause over five years than those who drove or used public transport.
